2002: Played mostly center and
left fields in 53 games, 49 of them as a starter…cranked out
10 home runs, which tied for third-best on the team…held nearly
a 60-percent slugging percentage as well as a .399 OB%...had 13
stolen bases in 17 tries…his 2002 batting average of .335
leads all returning regulars…also leading returning home run
hitter…hit .636 (7-for-11) with two home runs and five RBI
vs. Bethune-Cookman…got hot late, entering regional play on
a nine-game hitting streak, batting .447 (17-for-38) over that span…had
18 multiple-hit games, six of those coming during the hitting streak…banged
out five hits that included two doubles and a home run, and drove
home three against Bethune-Cookman (2/20)…had four RBI on
a pair of home runs against New Orleans (5/22) in the opening round
of the Sun Belt Conference Championships…followed that performance
with three hits, three runs scored, a double and a home run against
South Alabama (5/24)…ended the regular season going 6-for-9
in two games against Middle Tennessee (5/18-19) with three doubles,
a home run and five runs scored…1-for-1 in pinch-hitting opportunities…produced
16, two-out RBI.
Prior to FIU: Transferred
from Citrus College in Glendora, California where he was named the
team MVP and the Freshman of the Year in the Western States Conference
in 2000…in 2001 named Preseason All-America and first-team
All-Conference…in 2000, hit .406, three home runs, 27 RBI
and 17 stolen bases and in 2001, hit .389, seven home runs, 20 doubles,
24 RBI and 18 stolen bases…transferred to Citrus College after
playing at USC in 1999…at Citrus, named to the Dean’s
List in 2001…named team and league MVP during high school
while a member of the Rio Hondo League Champion Monrovia High School
team…senior year hit .714, which is a California state record,
with seven home runs, 41 RBI and 25 stolen bases…junior year
he hit .538 with four home runs…named the team MVP his junior
and senior years and was the Rio Hondo League MVP as well…selected
the Pasadena Star News Player of the Year as a senior and was first-team
All-State.
